The Acjachemen and Tongva peoples have cared for Puvungna, the village CSULB is built upon, and the surrounding lands since time immemorial; CalState Long Beach’s short history has been one of land theft and disrespect to Indigenous peoples, our ceremonial grounds, and the remains of our ancestors buried on the remaining 22 open space acres of Puvungna. Come out tomorrow to support us as we demand that CalState Long Beach adhere to the terms of our lawsuit settlement and protect Puvungna in perpetuity, under a conservation easement cared for by an Indigenous land trust! Please arrive by 2:30pm if possible, to find parking off campus and get to the meeting point to begin our action together. Byeongyeon is an unmyserious singer-songwriter who loves to talk about her universal and personal experiences as an immigrant, as a woman and as a human being. Having moved around her entire life - from Korea to Australia and finally to the city of angels - Byeonghyeon values the sense of belonging among diversity and hopes to foster connection through her music. Byeonghyeon’s genre is usually r&b and indie/folk music and you can find her singing early 2000s korean music at: @ByeonghyeonMusic

Nearly all the songs I write are either stemmed from experiences of those around me that have strong messages to share. Byeongyeon is an unmyserious singer-songwriter who loves to talk about her universal and personal experiences as an immigrant, as a woman and as a human being. Having moved around her entire life - from Korea to Australia and finally to the city of angels - Byeonghyeon values the sense of belonging among diversity and hopes to foster connection through her music. Byeonghyeon’s genre is usually r&b and indie/folk music and you can find her singing early 2000s korean music at: @ByeonghyeonMusic

Your attendance and donation at our Summer Celebration & Fundraiser will directly support our goal of raising $10,000 for two of our most critical community-based programs - the Environmental Justice Organizing Academy (EJOA) and the Defending the Sacred Youth Internship Program. 🌱

Through an eight-week academy, EJOA is a year-round program that prepares low-income youth of color to mobilize and investigate environmental injustices and create systemic change through both grassroots organizing strategies and policy making. EJOA also hosts workshops at local high schools in Orange County’s most impacted communities. EJOA graduates have advanced to staff and leadership roles at OCEJ and in the community. Three out of five OCEJ staff members are EJOA graduates.

In collaboration with Acjachemen and Tongva indigenous activists, youth interns develop social media campaigns, fundraising strategies, and programming with Friends of Puvungna, in service to the defense and restoration of sacred sites across Long Beach and Orange County 🪶 .

Since 2022, OCEJ Defending the Sacred interns have organized gatherings for Native youth, including poetry readings, workshops on traditional foodways, Acjachemen basket weaving, and discussions on identity and the importance of sacred sites. In 2024, Defending the Sacred Youth Interns will continue to support intergenerational gatherings for local Indigenous communities. 🪶✨
